Marc Coronado, Chair of Women’s Studies at De Anza College

Marc Coronado will be sewing pillows and taking custom orders from fabrics purchased at the Urban Burp Grand Opening.  She is the Chair of Women’s Studies at De Anza College in Cupertino, and her sewing supports the LEAD community.  LEAD, Latina/o Empowerment at De Anza, offers students an opportunity to develop leadership skills and work together to create a supportive college atmosphere.  Some of their projects include: providing funding for undocumented students, teaching basic English to adult farm workers, providing voter education, and hosting the annual De Anza Global Issues Conference.  Marc makes pillows, bags, aprons, children and adult clothing.  She will have some samples of her work made using Urban Burp fabrics available at the Grand Opening.  Be sure to stop by her table at the event!

Sherri Straton, Owner, SERGE A LOT

SERGE A LOT was founded in 2012 by Sherri Stratton who had over 13 years industry experience when she decided to start her own retail sewing business. Tammi and Heidi, Sherri’s daughters, suggested the nickname they had given the family’s basement which was filled with sewing machines, fabric, notions, and had a medieval feel to it…thus “Sergealot” was born! Currently, SERGE A LOT is one of only two sellers of the top-notch Baby Lock brand sewing machines in San Francisco and they also offer custom embroidery services, sewing lessons (private and group), and sewing machine repair and maintenance.  It is a true “family-owned” business, from start to finish.

Gerrie Davis

Gerrie Davis has the advantage of being a sewer all her life and having Electra for a sister.  She is always bouncing ideas off Electra regarding the many different and creative sewing and fabric art endeavors that come her way at her studio in Sausalito.   With Electra’s vast supply and knowledge of fabrics, she finds the perfect material for her creations.

She specializes in one-of-a-kind costumes for events such as Weddings, Victorian and Ballroom dresses, Rock Band apparel, Roman Togas, Pret a porter, even giant wall hangings.  No job is too large or small, but always a delightful challenge for Gerrie.

Please come by her table at the grand opening for examples of her work.  She will be selling some of her creations using the unique fabrics supplied by Urban Burp! Gerrie will also demonstrate card making and you can join in.

Vici Casana, Owner, Silver Plume Antiques

Vici Casana, owner of Silver Plume Antiques, deals in vintage clothing from the Victorian era through the 1970s, antique and collectible jewelry, period accessories, fabrics, and glassware. She has owned vintage clothing shops in California and Massachusetts, has had booths at group antique shops, and currently sells at major vintage clothing and jewelry shows in the Bay Area. Her display of Marimekko clothing at Urban Burp’s grand opening dates from the mid to late 1960s and features miniskirts, minidressses, drop-waist tunics, and bellbottom pants in the bold patterns and bright fabrics characteristic of the era.

Marimekko is a Finnish clothing and textile company founded in 1951 that is renowned for its important contributions to fashion, especially in the 1960s and 1970s, with its bold, bright colors; simple designs; and upbeat, original patterns.  The name Marimekko is an anagram of the first name of founder Armi Ratia—Mari—and mekko, the Finnish word for “dress.”

The colorful fabrics and striking prints—particularly designer Maija Isola’s Unikko (poppy) print—strongly influenced mid to late 20th-century fashions. Marimekko styles became famous in the United States when Jackie Kennedy bought eight Marimekko dresses and wore them often during the 1960 presidential campaign. In the 1990s they were featured in the TV series Sex and the City when Carrie Bradshaw wore a Marimekko bikini and later a Marimekko dress and when sets included Marimekko tablecloths and prints.
